Two weeks ago, Ratan Jain was shocked when a well-wisher called him to inform that the Akshay Kumar-Lara Dutta-Govinda starrer movie Bhaagam Bhaag, which was produced by Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd. and Popcorn Motion Pictures Pvt. Ltd. and whose overseas distribution rights belonged to him, had hit the theatres in Pakistan. Jain called up his confidant Al Mansoor in Dubai and asked him to look into the issue without delay.
Recently, the Pakistani government had confirmed that its 40-year-old forbid on screening Indian movies in Pakistan, in spite of that the current Bollywood obsession with Indo-Pak reconciliation movies. Confirming this Mahesh Bhatt, whose film Gangster formally released in Pakistan, says, Indian films that are shot in India are not allowed to release in Pakistan yet. Things have improved but not to a great extent. Indian films may see the light of day in Pakistan but only if they are shot outside India and meet certain specifications in their storyline. On the basis of this, Bhaagam Bhaag shouldn't have been released in Pakistan - but it did, and is currently being screened.
The Bhaagam Bhaag fiasco story goes that a guy called Shahid, who had the prints of Bhaagam Bhaag, took some papers to the Pakistani Censor board, claiming that he had the distribution rights of Bhaagam Bhaag. The Pakistani Censor Board quickly certified the film, which in turn led the release of film in the theatres.
Also it was known that Suneel Darshan's Shakalaka Boom Boom and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas too hit the theatres in a similar way across the border some time ago. Bhaagam Bhaag movie is hitting the theatres since fifteen days and nothing much was being done about that.
When contacted, Rajat Jain admitted that the fiasco had happened. “Al Mansoor had intervened on my behalf. However, I am not aware of the details as my office was looking into the matter and I wasn't personally supervising it. But if I am not wrong, the issue has been sorted out.”
